Abstract
In this study, radiological safety assessment due to soil from waste dumpsites in Ibadan metropolis has been carried out using results of the activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th radionuclides measured by using gamma ray spectroscopy. The mean concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th are 977±54, 29±2, 12±3Bqkg-1 for designated, 686±29, 53±16, 13±3Bqkg-1 for undesignated and 221±31, 31±10, 19±7Bqkg-1 for controlled sites, respectively. The highest value of radium equivalent activity is found as 252±Bqkg-1. This radium equivalent value is less than 370±Bqkg-1 maximum recommended by organization for Economic Cooperation Development (OECD) for building. The external hazard index is less than unity. Therefore, the soil and sites investigated are free from significant radiological health burden.
